Fifth Disease

😊 What is Fifth Disease?

Fifth disease, also known as “slapped cheek disease,” is a mild viral illness most common in children. It’s caused by parvovirus B19 and gets its nickname from the bright red rash that often appears on the cheeks.

🔍 Key Facts:

  • Cause: Parvovirus B19

  • Common in: Children (ages 5–15), but adults can get it too

  • Also called: Erythema infectiosum

  • Season: Often spreads in late winter and spring

🤒 Symptoms:

  1. Bright red rash on the cheeks (looks like a slap)

  2. Later, a lace-like rash may appear on the arms, legs, and body

  3. Mild flu-like symptoms before rash appears:

    • Fever

    • Headache

    • Runny nose

    • Sore throat

    • Fatigue

In adults, joint pain or swelling is more common than a rash.

🤝 How it spreads:

  • Through coughing or sneezing (respiratory droplets)

  • From mother to baby during pregnancy

  • People are most contagious before the rash appears

🛡️ Prevention:

  • Wash hands often

  • Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing

  • Stay home when sick

💊 Treatment:

  • No specific medicine needed — usually goes away on its own

  • Rest, fluids, and pain relievers (like acetaminophen) can help

  • Most people recover fully without problems

⚠️ Risks:

  • Can cause complications in:

    • Pregnant women (may affect the unborn baby)

    • People with weakened immune systems

    • People with certain blood disorders (like sickle cell anemia)
