What is Yellow Fever? 🦟🟡
Yellow Fever is a viral disease caused by the yellow fever virus, which is transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes, primarily the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
How is it Transmitted?
- The virus is spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes 🦟
- Mosquitoes become infected by biting infected monkeys or humans
- Transmission occurs mainly in tropical and subtropical areas of Africa and South America
Symptoms of Yellow Fever
Yellow Fever has three stages:
- Initial Stage (Acute Phase):
- Sudden onset of fever 🌡️
- Chills and headache 🤕
- Muscle aches and back pain 💪
- Nausea and vomiting 🤢
- Fatigue and weakness 😴
- Remission Stage:
- Symptoms improve and may temporarily disappear
- Toxic Stage (in some cases):
- Return of fever with jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes) 🟡
- Abdominal pain and vomiting (sometimes with blood)
- Kidney and liver failure
- Bleeding from the mouth, nose, eyes, or stomach
- Severe cases can be fatal ⚠️
Diagnosis
- Blood tests to detect the virus or antibodies
- Liver function tests to check for damage
Treatment
- No specific antiviral treatment
- Supportive care including hydration, pain relief, and treatment of complications
- Hospitalization may be required in severe cases
