What is Tonsillitis? 🤒👄
Tonsillitis is the inflammation of the tonsils, two oval-shaped masses of lymph tissue located at the back of the throat. It is usually caused by viral or bacterial infections.
Causes
- Viral infections: Most common cause (e.g., common cold viruses, influenza, Epstein-Barr virus)
- Bacterial infections: Often caused by Group A Streptococcus bacteria (strep throat)
Symptoms of Tonsillitis
- Sore throat and pain when swallowing 😖
- Red, swollen tonsils, sometimes with white or yellow patches 🩸
- Fever 🌡️
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
- Bad breath
- Headache and ear pain
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing in severe cases
Diagnosis
- Physical examination of the throat
- Throat swab for rapid strep test or culture to identify bacterial infection
- Blood tests in some cases
Treatment
- Viral tonsillitis: Usually resolves on its own; supportive care with rest, fluids, throat lozenges, and pain relievers (acetaminophen or ibuprofen)
- Bacterial tonsillitis: Treated with antibiotics such as penicillin or amoxicillin
- Severe or recurrent tonsillitis may require tonsillectomy (surgical removal of tonsils)
Prevention
- Practice good hand hygiene
- Avoid close contact with infected individuals
- Do not share utensils, food, or drinks
