A snakebite occurs when a snake punctures the skin with its fangs and injects venom or saliva. Snakebites can be venomous or non-venomous, with venomous bites posing serious health risks.
Types of Snakes Involved
- Venomous snakes: Cobras, vipers, rattlesnakes, kraits, and taipans
- Non-venomous snakes: Usually cause only minor injury or infection risk
Symptoms of Venomous Snakebite
- Immediate pain, swelling, and redness around the bite area 🩸
- Blistering and tissue damage at the site
- Nausea, vomiting 🤢
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing 😮💨
- Muscle weakness or paralysis
- Bleeding or bruising due to blood clotting issues
- Shock or unconsciousness in severe cases
First Aid for Snakebite 🆘
- Stay calm and keep the victim still to slow venom spread
- Remove tight clothing and jewelry near the bite area
- Immobilize the bitten limb and keep it at or slightly below heart level
- Do not apply a tourniquet, cut the wound, or try to suck out venom
- Call emergency services or get the victim to a hospital immediately
- Keep the victim hydrated and monitor breathing and consciousness
Medical Treatment
- Administration of antivenom specific to the snake species if available
- Pain management and wound care
- Supportive care including IV fluids, breathing support, and treatment for complications
- Surgery may be needed to remove damaged tissue
