🍽️ Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS)
Short Bowel Syndrome is a condition where the body cannot absorb enough nutrients because a significant portion of the small intestine is missing or not functioning properly.
🔍 Causes
- Surgical removal of large parts of the small intestine (due to Crohn’s disease, trauma, cancer, or ischemia)
- Congenital defects
- Diseases causing intestinal damage
⚠️ Symptoms
- Chronic diarrhea
- Malnutrition and weight loss
- Fatigue
- Dehydration
- Electrolyte imbalances
- Bloating and cramping
🛠️ Treatment
- Nutritional support (special diets, vitamins, minerals)
- Parenteral nutrition (IV feeding) if needed
- Medications to slow intestinal transit and improve absorption
- Surgery or intestinal transplant in severe cases
