Nasal Obstruction

👃 Nasal Obstruction

Nasal obstruction refers to a blockage or congestion in the nasal passages that makes it difficult to breathe through the nose.

🧬 Causes:

  • Nasal congestion due to colds, allergies, or sinus infections
  • Nasal polyps (soft growths inside the nose)
  • Deviated nasal septum (crooked cartilage/wall between nostrils)
  • Enlarged turbinates (structures inside the nose that can swell)
  • Foreign bodies (especially in children)
  • Tumors or masses in the nasal cavity
  • Chronic sinusitis or inflammation

🩺 Symptoms:

  • Difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils
  • Nasal stuffiness or congestion
  • Mouth breathing, especially during sleep
  • Snoring or sleep apnea
  • Reduced sense of smell
  • Nasal discharge or post-nasal drip

🔍 Diagnosis:

  • Physical examination and nasal endoscopy by a doctor
  • Imaging (CT scan) if structural issues or tumors suspected
  • Allergy testing if allergic rhinitis is suspected

💊 Treatment:

  • Treat underlying cause (allergy medications, decongestants, antibiotics)
  • Nasal corticosteroid sprays to reduce inflammation
  • Saline nasal sprays or rinses
  • Surgical correction for structural problems (septoplasty, turbinate reduction)
  • Removal of foreign bodies or tumors
