👃 Nasal Obstruction
Nasal obstruction refers to a blockage or congestion in the nasal passages that makes it difficult to breathe through the nose.
🧬 Causes:
- Nasal congestion due to colds, allergies, or sinus infections
- Nasal polyps (soft growths inside the nose)
- Deviated nasal septum (crooked cartilage/wall between nostrils)
- Enlarged turbinates (structures inside the nose that can swell)
- Foreign bodies (especially in children)
- Tumors or masses in the nasal cavity
- Chronic sinusitis or inflammation
🩺 Symptoms:
- Difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils
- Nasal stuffiness or congestion
- Mouth breathing, especially during sleep
- Snoring or sleep apnea
- Reduced sense of smell
- Nasal discharge or post-nasal drip
🔍 Diagnosis:
- Physical examination and nasal endoscopy by a doctor
- Imaging (CT scan) if structural issues or tumors suspected
- Allergy testing if allergic rhinitis is suspected
💊 Treatment:
- Treat underlying cause (allergy medications, decongestants, antibiotics)
- Nasal corticosteroid sprays to reduce inflammation
- Saline nasal sprays or rinses
- Surgical correction for structural problems (septoplasty, turbinate reduction)
- Removal of foreign bodies or tumors
