👓 Myopia (Nearsightedness) – Overview
Myopia is a common vision condition where distant objects appear blurry, but close objects can be seen clearly.
⚙️ Cause
- The eyeball is too long or the cornea is too curved.
- This causes light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it.
📋 Symptoms
- Difficulty seeing distant objects clearly (e.g., road signs, chalkboard)
- Squinting to see better
- Eyestrain or headaches from trying to focus
🩺 Diagnosis
- Comprehensive eye exam with a refraction test
- Measurement of visual acuity
💊 Treatment
- Prescription glasses or contact lenses to correct focus
- Refractive surgery (e.g., LASIK) in suitable candidates
- Orthokeratology (special contact lenses worn overnight to reshape the cornea temporarily)
⚠️ Complications
- High myopia increases risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma, or cataracts
🛡️ Prevention & Management
- Regular eye exams, especially in children
- Outdoor activities to help slow progression in kids
- Proper vision correction to reduce eyestrain
