Laryngitis

🎤 Laryngitis

Laryngitis is the inflammation of the larynx (voice box), particularly affecting the vocal cords. It often results in voice changes and throat discomfort.

🧬 Causes:

  • Viral infections (most common cause; e.g., cold, flu)
  • Overuse or strain of the voice (yelling, singing)
  • Bacterial infections (less common)
  • Irritants such as smoke, allergens, or acid reflux (GERD)
  • Allergic reactions

🩺 Symptoms:

  • Hoarseness or weak voice
  • Loss of voice (aphonia)
  • Sore or dry throat
  • Tickling sensation or rawness in the throat
  • Dry cough
  • Difficulty speaking loudly or for long periods

🔍 Diagnosis:

  • Usually clinical based on symptoms
  • Laryngoscopy if symptoms persist or to rule out other causes (e.g., vocal cord nodules, cancer)

💊 Treatment:

  • Voice rest (avoid talking or whispering)
  • Hydration – drink plenty of fluids
  • Humidified air
  • Avoid irritants like smoking and alcohol
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers for discomfort
  • Treat underlying causes (e.g., antibiotics if bacterial, antacids if reflux)
