🎤 Laryngitis
Laryngitis is the inflammation of the larynx (voice box), particularly affecting the vocal cords. It often results in voice changes and throat discomfort.
🧬 Causes:
- Viral infections (most common cause; e.g., cold, flu)
- Overuse or strain of the voice (yelling, singing)
- Bacterial infections (less common)
- Irritants such as smoke, allergens, or acid reflux (GERD)
- Allergic reactions
🩺 Symptoms:
- Hoarseness or weak voice
- Loss of voice (aphonia)
- Sore or dry throat
- Tickling sensation or rawness in the throat
- Dry cough
- Difficulty speaking loudly or for long periods
🔍 Diagnosis:
- Usually clinical based on symptoms
- Laryngoscopy if symptoms persist or to rule out other causes (e.g., vocal cord nodules, cancer)
💊 Treatment:
- Voice rest (avoid talking or whispering)
- Hydration – drink plenty of fluids
- Humidified air
- Avoid irritants like smoking and alcohol
- Over-the-counter pain relievers for discomfort
- Treat underlying causes (e.g., antibiotics if bacterial, antacids if reflux)
