🔍 What Is the Fundus?
The term “fundus” refers to the upper or farthest part of a hollow organ in the body. It varies depending on which organ we’re talking about, but in general, it’s the part opposite the opening of the organ.
📍 Types of Fundus in the Body:
1. 🧠 Eye – Fundus of the Eye
The fundus is the back portion of the inside of the eye, visible with an ophthalmoscope.
Includes:
Retina
Optic disc
Macula
Blood vessels
➡️ Used in eye exams to detect diseases like:
Diabetic retinopathy
Hypertensive changes
Glaucoma
Retinal detachment
2. 🍽️ Stomach – Gastric Fundus
The fundus of the stomach is the upper part, located above where the esophagus enters.
It’s involved in:
Storing undigested food
Producing gases from digestion
Secreting acid and digestive enzymes
➡️ Can be seen during endoscopy or imaging
➡️ Important in hiatal hernias, gastric tumors, or fundoplication surgery
3. 👶 Uterus – Uterine Fundus
The fundus of the uterus is the top, rounded part above the openings of the fallopian tubes.
In pregnancy:
Fundal height is measured to assess fetal growth
Helps estimate gestational age
➡️ A firm, high fundus after delivery helps stop bleeding (uterine contraction)
